I thought Ervinton was co-champs in the Cumberland? Under the automatic district champion playoff birth rule it does not apply to a co-champ. Correct me if I'm wrong. That would make Honaker the #4 seed in division 1.
What if the VHSL doesn't do away with the "Rye Cove Rule" and all of the current Region D Division 2 teams that would be able to drop to Division 1 do so? What if this would have been the case this year?
This is what the playoffs would have looked like if that were the case - in regards to the new regional alignment with the introduction of the fourth district & four additional schools. Granted, schedules for some teams would have been changed a little, but for the most part would have stayed the same:
In Division 2, you would have had:
#4 Gate City (4-6, 13.5) @ #1 Lebanon* (8-2, 19.1)
#3 Virginia High (5-5, 16.8) @ #2 Powell Valley (7-3, 18.0)
In Division 1, it would have looked like this:
#4 Ervinton* (7-3, 14.0) @ #1 J.I. Burton* (10-0, 21.5)
#3 Appalachia (8-2, 17.2) @ #2 Haysi* (9-1, 18.1)
*Denotes district champion
Sitting at home would have been these three teams, all playoff teams under the current system and alignment:
Castlewood (7-3, 13.2)
Honaker (6-4, 15.7)
Clintwood (6-4, 15.0)
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it...

These teams very well could be the 4 playing for the Region D Div.2 Title next year!
I think the rankings will be a little different. HOWEVER, I dont think 3 teams from the NEW CMD will get in.
Honaker could be the other team.
The biggest problem is COEBURN in the Cumberland District. They should be moved down to Div.1 ... IMO.
If Coeburn goes 4-6 or 5-5 and wins the weak Cumberland District we will have a possible 8-2 or 9-1 team sitting home.

You're right, no question it would have bitten Clintwood in the butt this year.
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.

Even still, that's not my point. Several on this forum that support a certain school seem to believe that if they are able to drop to Division 1 status - that this will be their post-season salvation. Even further, the point is you will have 16 Division 1 teams competing for 4 playoff spots, while in Division 2 you will have only 7 teams looking to gain one of the 4 playoff seedings.
This just goes to show how ignorant it will be to have it set up this way. Some may think it's great moving down to Division 1 - until it's their school/team that ends up getting screwed in the same manner that some will most definitely have done to them. You think you've heard whining in the past, just wait to what you'll hear if the Region D football divisional split is 7/16 like some have mentioned on here.

For determining the automatic bid to the playoffs you would go to the co-champ that has the highest points total in the Power Points system. After that you would go to head-to-head competition. Ervinton would get the playoff spot because they had a higher amount of points compared to Castlewood.

Of course you're using this year as your basis, what would it have been several other years?
The biggest thing most people have said that even that isn't a fix.
I know I, and others have said, its bad that a 6-4 Clintwood team goes this year, while what 8-2 ones have sat home before.
I mean this one year, a bunch of teams beat Gate City than in a normal year will not. I wouldn't want to count on that being a yearly thing

VHSDevil, under the Regional re-alignment with Lee High coming in, and if the VHSL does not do away with the Rye Cove Rule - under the current enrollment figures both Coeburn and Honaker will be Division 1 next season.

Are you saying they will be or saying they should be Div.1 next year?
From what I know, Hoe-naked & Coal-burnt will be Div.2 next year!

According to the VHSL's website for enrollment, Lee High is at 829. Coeburn is at 398 while Honaker is at 360. Under the Rye Cove Rule adopted by the VSHL a few years ago, if a school is less than half in enrollment size of another regional school listed in that same divisional status (football), then the smaller school is allowed to drop divisions. In this case, both Honaker and Coeburn would be Division 1 if they elected to be.
The key to all of this is the Rye Cove Rule. If the VHSL drops it, then Region D will have 11-12 of each Division 1 & 2 teams as far as football is concerned. If they keep it in place, the Region will be very Division 1 top-heavy - allowing it to be a lot easier for Division 2 teams while in Division 1 you'll have 16 teams vying for 4 playoff positions. With both the Cumberland and the Black Diamond (under the talked about re-aligment in divisions) being completely Division 1 - and if you have a Division 1 champion in the LPD like this year - i.e. Burton or Appy - then you'll have 13 Division 1 teams vying for one playoff bid. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
